I approached You and I in November 2014 and paid over the telephone $330.00 with my Master-card as a deposit for their service with the manager's promise that she will send me the contract next day, to be read and signed, if agreed with the terms and conditions etc. The contract was not delivered to me. I called the second day and asked why couldn't she send the contract over an email and she said that her email systems were all crashing and she didn't have email where to send it from. I realised that their dealings were not transparent and something was going on. I called and spoke to a staff member and instructed them to pay me the money back etc. insulted me very badly in one of her text messages saying that I was a mean person and probably this is why I was still single. I never had the chance to speak to her in person or had an interview with her. After many emails and text messages etc. the money was never deposited into my account. They keep on saying that she will deposit the money into my account and she never did. It's a lot of money that they take from many people. I never got any receipt for my payment at all as well. Berkeley's pricing starts from £15,000 ($21,000) and goes up to £60,000 ($85,000) for private headhunting, with a year of unlimited introductions. For highly tailored packages — with some very specific requests — they can charge up to £100,000, she says. One of her clients even entertains his dinner dates on his own private plane. There's something intriguing about the elite dating industry, a world in which the rich and famous spare no expense in their mission to find love. To get a sneak peek into the jet-set world of matchmaking, Business Insider met Mairead Molloy, an Irish-born former hotelier and qualified criminal psychologist who is the global director of matchmaking and elite introductions agency Berkeley International. When we met in central London, Molloy had a sun-kissed glow even though it was March — when she's not flying around the world playing cupid, she's based in the south of France. Berkeley's clients are wealthy professionals — she counts millionaires, billionaires, and even celebrities on her books — who are looking for love but don't have time to find it themselves. Her job, she explained, involves physically jumping on a plane to find the perfect matches for her clients in some cases. Berkeley's pricing starts from £15,000 and goes up to £60,000 for private headhunting, with a year of unlimited introductions. But Molloy said she can charge up to £100,000 for highly tailored packages — with some very specific requests. It all depends on how discrete you want us to be, how much travelling you want me to do, how much of my team you need. The more tailored you want it — the more we charge. A lot of people need to be hand held and we'll look after them from start to finish." But Molloy added that she's straight up with her clients about what she offers. "If you think you can buy love and happiness then we can't help you," she said. "If you have the wrong mindset and you're dividing your fee into each member you meet, then you’re going to have a nervous breakdown." The Pride and Prejudice approach. Molloy has been matchmaking for Berkeley International for 15 years. It's headquartered in London's prestigious Berkeley Square in Mayfair, but now operates in 13 locations across Europe — from Copenhagen to Cannes — as well as New York and even Melbourne. Business, Molloy said, is booming thanks to a combination of digital dating fatigue and global uncertainty — a trend she calls the "lipstick effect." "When times are tough people spend more on themselves and the same applies to dating and introductions," she said. Many of her clients are tired of "anonymous" dating apps, and are after a personal touch, she says, and her team will often be on call before, during, and after a date. "People can come in and talk to us over a glass of wine or we go to their houses," she said. "The trend for the human touch is back. "It's all a bit Pride and Prejudice and people love it." Many of Berkeley's well-heeled clients travel frequently for work, and are just as willing to travel to find love. "There is no shortage of extravagance when it comes to our clients, they will go to any lengths to find love," Molloy said. "50% of our total membership travel to meet people — it is what it is." She added that the company's "Nylon" — New York to London — service is where the company sees the most success. "We work a lot with private jet charters to fly people back and forth," she said. One of her clients even entertains his dates over dinner on his own private jet. "They'll land in Paris and then fly back to London — it's dinner in the sky! You don't ever get off the plane, it just touches down to land and then they fly back." Matching expectations. Molloy said that these days her clients are less concerned about age because "we’re dying later so age is less of a thing." And don't assume her clients are all middle-aged CEOs — her youngest client is currently 19, and her father is footing the bill. "Now a 30-year-old [woman] is happy to go out with a 50-year-old man. Woman are having kids much later so they're easier to match, too, and we get lots of women coming to us in their 40s who have already had their eggs frozen." While people are happy to travel and less hung up on age, Molloy added that her clients are much more fussy with their wish lists than they once were. "Expectation has increased because of the society we live in, everything is on demand, everyone wants a quicker and better service," she said, adding that millennials are her "most intolerant clients." "When you pay money for something you have an expectation of that service, so we have a lot of pressure on our shoulders to match the person to the expectation of the other person [and] to match the fee that they have paid." So what does £100,000 get you? Sense of humour is one of the most sought-after qualities that Molloy's clients are looking for in a match. Being interested in art, a love of theatre, horse riding, walks in the park, and travelling are all also pretty standard requests. Celebrities use her services, too. She said that "well known" people will say: "I want to meet that guy that was in that TV show, can you track him down?'" And off she and her team will go. One of her highly tailored packages, which costs close to £100,000, is for one of her younger female clients — and it's being paid for by her parents. "They want to find a husband for her who has to be of Indian-American heritage, who's from a very specific university — in this case it's Harvard — and has to live in San Francisco," she said. Once Molloy's team has tracked down a match, it's the parents who meet them first, but if they're from the same culture, she explained, they're usually quite happy to do this. Molloy added that she finds it fascinating putting different cultures together and seeing how they mix and evolve. It was the fourth night of a business trip, the fourth night eating alone," he recalled. "I looked around the restaurant and there were 10 other people on their own in the same restaurant, looking at their phones." That feeling of isolation was a constant bugbear for him, he says: "I enjoy a good meal, but I find it difficult to enjoy food on my own. Good company is a key ingredient." Looking around the restaurant, he did what everyone else was doing - and took out his phone. "I just wanted some way of connecting to them and I went online to see some way, or app, of doing that. I couldn't find anything so I thought 'there's a gap in the market'." With it, the idea for Table4one was born: an app that connects people with business people in the same city who don't want to look like a Billy-no-mates. Users sign up via Google's Play Store or Apple's App Store, and enter details such as job, industry area and professional interests - whether they'd like to meet someone to talk business, pitch/be pitched an idea or even seek a job. Finally, and importantly, it asks for your social interests, whether they be sport, arts, politics, and so on. The idea is to match you with like-minded individuals to while away an otherwise grim lunch or dinner time if you were dining solo. "It's on a professional basis, it's finding someone in the same industry or similar objectives to what you have - it's LinkedIn for dining," he says. The app is something of a passion for Haughey, with his brother and wife working on elements of the project. Previously with Dell for nine years in technical support leadership roles, followed by a decade in the UK with Barclays, directing IT and HR operations, he now works full-time as a senior director of operations at a marketing company in the skincare and wellness sectors. "I travel about 25-30pc of my time, so it's enough that it's still enjoyable and I like to see new places and experience new cultures - what I don't like is sitting down and having dinner on my own … I would rather travel with someone I don't like than on my own." Launched at the last Web Summit in Lisbon, Table4one now has 27,000 downloads across 80 countries. "So, we're getting traction," he says. "Even with that, it is a numbers game, so 27,000 out of a global population is still a drop in the ocean, but it's a good start." The app itself has a matching algorithm, so Haughey says if there if someone in the same industry or shares the same interests as you it'll match you with them, and has the ability to pull in some of your info from LinkedIn, adding: "We're quite early in our evolution, so the more we can grow the user base, the better the connection." Given that it's a free app for users, it's monetised through restaurants, which can subscribe to be "at the top of recommended lists locally". Haughey says when the app reaches critical mass, he'll be looking to release a premium model with additional features and advertising. "It's been self-funding up to now, but we're looking at seed funding or angel investment now," he reveals. What the app doesn't do - and it's clearly spelled out on it landing page - is act as a dating site. The feedback has shown that "women would feel a lot more comfortable with meeting other women business travellers". That option is provided, with users choosing from a list of would-be dining companions on their day of choice. On link-ups, he cites a recent example in Las Vegas, where he was showcasing the technology two weeks ago at the Consumer Electronics Show, where the CEO of a Japanese event management company, like EventBrite here, was using the app, and is now keen to do business with the Irish startup, and provided insights into its own IPO experience. What the app has shown is the cultural attitude to food. "What we've found so far in Europe is the further south you go, the more adoption there is. "The Latin cultures have more of a appreciation for the whole event of eating. Our biggest country for downloads is Portugal, then it's Spain and Morocco. In the Nordics there isn't the same uptake and culture." And the Sligo native thinks being stand-offish can be bad for business, following the maxim of New York Times bestseller Keith Ferrazzi, a consummate networker, whose book was simply titled Never Eat Alone.
