Match is one of the oldest online dating platforms. Founded in 1995, its long history and large, worldwide user base may make it an appealing option to those new to online dating. This platform also may be a good choice for people interested in meaningful connections. In January 2026, when we surveyed 300 adults ages 50 and older who’ve used online dating services in the last three years, 50 percent of Match users said they joined to find a “long-term romantic partner.” Only 38 percent of respondents across all 22 brands in our survey said the same. That’s one of the reasons we named Match the top platform for serious relationships in our roundup of the best online dating sites for older adults. Members only. In this Match.com review, we break down how the site works, which features set it apart, how much it costs and whether it’s worth it for older adults. And if you want to learn more about our research process, check out our article on how we test online dating services for older adults. How does Match.com work? Match is available on its website or as a mobile app, which you can download in the Apple App store if you have an iPhone or Google Play if you have an Android. It uses a guided sign-up process similar to other major dating platforms. One tester said it took about 15 minutes to complete her profile and found the questions straightforward and easy to understand. One limitation she noted was you can’t go back and change answers as you progress, you must complete the full process and then edit your profile afterward. Profiles on Match include standard fields such as photos, conversation prompts, hobbies and demographic details like age. Once your account is live, you can browse and filter profiles or see users who have already “liked” you. To match with someone, you both have to “like” each other. Once you do, you’re connected as “mutuals” and unlock unlimited messaging for the match. With a free account, however, the “who liked you” section is blurred, meaning you can’t see those profiles unless you upgrade to a paid account. As part of the sign-up process, Match requires phone verification. You’ll receive a text message with a code to confirm your account, which helps reduce fake profiles. While this phone verification isn’t as robust as the process with other services we’ve tested, like SeniorMatch’s live video verification, it is stronger than platforms that rely solely on optional verification. Match also has staff reviewing profiles to further limit fraudulent accounts, according to the website. Our lab testers created this fake profile picture using AI to test Match’s ability to spot bad actors. Match caught it after one hour. Courtesy of Match.com. About 15 percent of our surveyed Match users reported encountering a fake profile or scam attempt. That’s much lower than scam rates that our survey respondents reported for other large platforms — 48 percent of Tinder users said they’d encountered a fake profile or scam, for instance, and 38 percent of Facebook Dating users said the same. To test how well Match responds to fraudulent profiles, we uploaded a profile photo made using AI. The site accepted it for about an hour, after which the account was flagged for unusual activity and removed. Match user satisfaction. According to our survey, 51 percent of Match users were satisfied with the quality of their matches, and 25 percent were dissatisfied. And 24 percent of users said they were neutral. Our experience testing Match.com. Courtesy of Match.com. Score: 9.3 out of 10. Pros and cons. Pros. Free trial Tiered memberships unlock additional features Optional add-ons to boost your profile. Cons. Limited gender identity options No phone-based customer support. Features. Free version: Yes Safeguards: Text verification and photo verification Age range: 18 and older Customer support: Online form. Key takeaways from our testing. Free trial of paid features. Match offers a three-day free trial of its paid plans. While brief, this trial gives users a chance to explore premium features before committing to longer subscriptions. Once your trial is up, you’ll be automatically billed for the subscription you selected at sign-up. If you decide the paid version isn’t right for you, you need to cancel in the website or app’s account settings section before the trial ends to avoid being charged. Some dating sites offer free trials, but many don’t give you access to paid features such as unlimited messaging. Compared with platforms that heavily limit free access, Match’s trial can be helpful for people who want to know what they’re paying for before committing. That said, if you have service queries during your trial, Match only offers customer support through an online form. A la carte add-ons. Users can buy profile “boosts” and “super likes” without subscribing to a full membership. Boosts place your profile at the top of search results for one hour, while super likes highlight your profile to users you choose (as a way to express extra interest). Pricing ranges from $4.99 for a single boost or super like to discounted bundles for multiple purchases. Match is the only dating site we tested offering these features as standalone purchases. While these add-ons provide more options and flexibility, you may end up saving money by buying a Platinum membership (which includes these features as part of your subscription) rather than buying add-ons a la carte. Middling gender inclusivity. Match scored only a 3 out of 5 for inclusivity in our testing. During sign-up, users can select their gender and the gender they’re interested in dating. But only two gender options are available, and you cannot select that you’re interested in multiple genders. Other platforms we tested, like eharmony, provide more diverse gender identity options. eharmony also offers more race and ethnicity options for self-identification (12) than Match (nine). Having more precise options for self-identification may help users feel more comfortable and better express who they are.
