First off, let’s look at the nutritional profile for medjool dates, the most popular variety (while you can eat fresh dates, the dried version is what you’ll see most often in grocery stores). According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 100 grams (g) of medjool dates, or around five medium-sized dates, contains: 277 calories 2 g of protein 0 g of fat 75 g of carbohydrates 7 g of fiber. Dates also boast a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Per the USDA, these include: 64 milligrams (mg) of calcium (6% of the recommended daily intake) 54 mg of magnesium (17% of the recommended daily intake) 696 mg of potassium (27% of the recommended daily intake) 1.61 mg of niacin (12% of the recommended daily intake) So, what benefits might you expect from dates? Here are some of the biggest ones. They may support heart health. “Dates are rich in magnesium, potassium, and fiber, which help support healthy blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels and balancing sodium levels,” explains Michelle Routhenstein, M.S., R.D., C.D.C.E.S., C.D.N., a preventive cardiology dietitian at EntirelyNourished.com. What’s more, a study published in Nutrients found that eating dates daily may help reduce total cholesterol levels and levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. They help fight inflammation. “Dates are also rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acids, which help reduce inflammation, neutralize free radicals, and protect the blood vessels from oxidative damage,” says Routhenstein. Phenolic acids, in particular, may block the activity of enzymes associated with the development of conditions like high blood pressure, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases, according to a study in Molecules. They can be used as a natural sweetener. Despite being higher in carbohydrates and sugar, studies show that dates don’t increase blood sugar levels the same way other high-sugar foods do—in fact, they may even help to reduce it on the whole, per research in the World Journal of Diabetes. This is primarily because dates are low on the glycemic index, notes Davis, which means that they are digested slowly and typically don’t cause blood sugar spikes (even though they are sweet enough to qualify as a treat). For this reason, they make an excellent added sugar alternative for snacks and sweets. “For an all-natural sugar alternative, dates can be made into a paste for pie fillings, as a binder for energy bites, or baked into cookies, bars, or sticky date cake,” says Davis. “You can also make a date syrup to replace liquid sweeteners in beverages or baked goods.” How to enjoy dates. In addition to the sugar swaps above, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the fruit. “Dates can easily be chopped and added to oatmeal, salads, or grain bowls for a touch of sweetness and nutrition.
