George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, was arrested by the Minneapolis Police Department outside a convenience store. During his arrest, Officer Derek Chauvin pinned Floyd to the ground with his knee on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, including the last 2 minutes and 53 seconds of which Floyd was unresponsive. The bystander's video recording captured this incident, which sparked widespread outrage and protests across the United States and globally. After the video was widely shared on social media, it led to a massive backlash against police brutality and systemic racism. Officer Derek Chauvin was subsequently fired from the police department and was later convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The other officers involved in the incident were also charged with various crimes.
